Funding for producing Swedish film

Funding for producing Swedish feature-length film, short film and documentary film is handled by the Swedish Film Institute’s Production Funding department. This page provides information about the Swedish Film Institute’s various types of funding for film production. Further information can be found on the page for each type of funding.

Development funding

This funding aims to help develop high-quality, highly attractive film and converged media projects, and to improve their chances of being realised. The funding encompasses short film, documentary film, feature-length fiction film and converged media.
The funding may be applied for by producers, and in some instances also by established screenwriters and directors, particularly in the project's initial stages. The applicant may be a natural person domiciled in Sweden, or a company, a branch of an international company or another legal entity registered in Sweden. Funding above SEK 500,000 can only be awarded to publicly listed companies.

Production funding

This funding aims to promote Swedish film that is attractive and of high-quality through its cinematic quality, diversity, innovation and international success. The funding encompasses short film, documentary film, feature-length fiction film and converged media.
Applicants may be established Swedish producers, i.e. people domiciled in Sweden, or a company, a branch of an international company or another legal entity registered in Sweden. Funding above SEK 500,000 can only be awarded to listed companies.

Automatic funding

This funding aims to support high-quality films with strong box-office potential on the Swedish film market. Prioritising box-office potential also creates predictability in the awarding of funding, which may facilitate private investment in Swedish film.
Applicants may be established Swedish producers, i.e. people domiciled in Sweden, or a company, a branch of an international company or another legal entity registered in Sweden.

Funding for international co-productions

This funding aims to strengthen the collaboration between international producers and Swedish production companies, and to increase opportunities for international financing and the dissemination of international film in Sweden.

Box-office related funding/PRS

This funding aims to contribute to a strong, dynamic film industry and facilitate financing for new Swedish film.
Production companies registered in Sweden may register the film with the Swedish Film Institute to be eligible for box-office related funding.
