Bergman revisited new short film initiative ahead of the 2018 centenary

What might Persona, Summer with Monika or Scenes from a Marriage be like today? With its Bergman Revisited initiative, the Swedish Film Institute and SVT are asking experienced directors to make a short film inspired by the world of Ingmar Bergman. Six short fiction films that could be based on a specific film, a character, a location, or some other aspect with a connection to Bergman’s universe.

14 July 2018 would have been Ingmar Bergman’s 100th birthday. To mark the occasion, the Swedish Film Institute and SVT are calling for experienced directors with a connection to Bergman. The result will be six short films, no more than 10 minutes each. The films will be given their world premiere at the 2018 Göteborg Film Festival, and they will all be screened on SVT (The Swedish Public Service Broadcaster) during summer 2018.
“We’re very curious to see what kind of exciting, unexpected new takes and comments directors might have on Bergman’s universe, and this collection of shorts will obviously be given plenty of screen time during the centenary in 2018,” say Andreas Fock, Film Commissioner for Short Films at the Swedish Film Institute, and Helena Ingelsten, Editor and Producer at SVT Short Film.

Prominent illustrator and artist Jesper Waldersten has exclusively created the illustration for the initiative, and he comments:
“Occasionally someone comes along pulling Bergman’s shadow. Usually near a beach. In black. In white. At those times I always say yes. For a long time.”
