Regional Film Resource Centres throughout Sweden

The Swedish Film Institute carries the responsibility for the national film politics in Sweden. On a regional level the responsibility lies with 19 Film Regions. The Film Institute works in close collaboration with them.

The Film Regions differ in their organization, but they are all active within the areas of film pedagogy, screening and dissemination as well as talent development and professional filmmaking. The regional film entities support both municipal activities and organizations within civil society, including individual filmmakers, cinemas, and other screening organizers. They coordinate, collaborate, and develop these areas further. The Film Region Association (Filmregionerna) serves as the interest organization for the regional film entities. On their website, you can find contact information for each regional film organization.

With the exception of Stockholm Region, the regional film entities are financed through the so-called Cultural Cooperation Model. In short, this model means that state support for regional culture is distributed collectively through the Swedish Arts Council. This support requires regional co-financing and the development of a regional cultural plan through dialogue with municipalities, civil society, and the professional cultural sector. The Swedish Film Institute participates in the Arts Council's consultations on this model.

Description of the Regions’ Areas of Activity

Film Education

Children and young people should have increased opportunities to experience and create film, both in school and during their free time. Among other initiatives, the regions help with school cinema, film courses in cultural schools, workshops in libraries, and professional development for educators. The regions also organize festivals for films created by young people, which serve as qualifiers for the national Novemberfestival in Trollhättan. The Novemberfestival is a festival exclusively consisting of films created by young people in the ages of 16 to 26.

Screening and Distribution

Everyone should have access to a rich range of films. The regions support cinemas, festivals, and other screening organizers. Often, the regions also work to make regionally produced films accessible.

Talent Development and Professional Filmmaking

Through workshops, coaching, and networking, the regions provide filmmakers with support at various stages of development, from amateur to professional. Most regions also offer both financial support and free equipment loans. Some regions also act as co-producers of films. Film i Väst, Film i Skåne, Filmpool Nord, and Film Stockholm are the largest film funds, but Film i Dalarna, Film Västernorrland, and Gotland also have funds.
