Distribution Funding

The Swedish Film Institute awards funding to distributors on the Swedish market for launching Swedish feature-length film, subtitling and audio description of Swedish film, launching imported quality film and dissemination of Swedish short film. The aim is to increase the audience for Swedish film and to promote the distribution of quality film.

Funding for distribution and screening – annual funding

The aim of the funding is to increase opportunities for the film range to reach a larger audience across Sweden, and to increase the diversity of the Swedish film repertoire. The funding is available to parties who promote the distribution and screening of film in different platforms, such as distributors, film festivals, associations and organizations. Only established parties in the Swedish film industry may apply.

Funding for distribution and screening – individual project and title

The aim of the funding is to increase opportunities for the film range to reach a larger audience across Sweden, and to increase the diversity of the Swedish film repertoire. The funding is available to parties who promote the distribution and screening of film in different platforms, such as distributors, film festivals, associations and organizations.

Funding for launching Swedish feature-length film

Funding for launching Swedish feature-length film helps to secure Swedish film a prominent position on the national cinema repertoire. The funding is intended for films that have insufficient launch resources in relation to their audience potential, and is also awarded to films where it is deemed to be able to make a significant difference to the audience results.
From 1 June 2015, all Swedish feature-length films (over 70 minutes) that have received production funding from the Swedish Film Institute are entitled to launch funding. Film projects without production funding are also welcome to apply.

Funding for increased accessibility

Film funding for audio description and subtitling in the Swedish language is important to ensure that people with impaired hearing or vision have the opportunity to access Swedish film at the cinema and on VoD and DVD. Funding is awarded for Swedish subtitling of Swedish film for cinema copies and DVD, audio description in Swedish of Swedish film for DVD, cinema screening of Swedish film which is subtitled or audio described in Swedish, and development and test projects that promote the objectives of the funding.

Funding for the dissemination of Swedish short film

Funding for the dissemination of Swedish short film increases the opportunities of artistically valuable films in this genre to reach an audience. Funding is primarily awarded to large distribution projects encompassing several films. It is also possible to apply for funding for the distribution of individual titles.

Funding for the launch of imported quality film

Funding for the launch of imported quality film helps to vary the range of films available in the Swedish cinema repertoire. Project funding is awarded on an annual basis to profiled quality film distributors for launching several film titles. Title funding is awarded to distributors not encompassed by project funding, for the launch of individual films. Special version funding is also available for Swedish versioning/dubbing of imported children's film. These funding types will be discontinued from 1 January 2016 and replaced by 'Funding for distribution and screening – annual funding' and 'Funding for distribution and screening – individual project and title' (see above).

Funding for the dissemination of feature-length film nationwide

The aim of this funding is to encourage distributors to include film on the cinema programme that has little chance of achieving high box office sales. The funding is applied for after a film has been released, and is calculated based on how many cinemas have shown the film with low box office sales.
