The Swedish Film Institute's International Department
The mission of the Swedish Film Institute's International Department is to promote contemporary Swedish films of all genres outside Sweden in the various arenas provided by festivals, markets and other special events.
The department works closely with producers and sales agents to find the appropriate platform for films with international potential, both commercial and artistic, and ensure maximum exposure for Swedish films and increased film exports.
One of our aims is for at least one Swedish film per year to be selected for the leading festivals: Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto, IDFA and Clermont-Ferrand. In addition to these, the department works with many other important film festivals and also arranges Swedish film focuses. To coincide with three of the major festivals (Berlin, Cannes and IDFA), we also publish the promotion magazine Swedish Film, which provides information about new Swedish films for an international audience.
The leading film festivals constitute the principal arena for the international launch of quality films. International launches are highly costly and require us to make optimum use of the opportunities afforded. To this end, the Swedish Film Institute provides launch funding for films premiering at high-profile festivals.
The Swedish Film Institute is part of the two international networks The Five Nordics and EFP – European Film Promotion. The International Department is responsible for coordinating this involvement. Within the framework of The Five Nordics, the Nordic film institutes join together to share an office at the festivals in Berlin, Cannes and Toronto.
