New film by Ruben Östlund, and animation and monster agents for younger viewers

Nyheter om svensk film

The latest titles awarded funding by the Swedish Film Institute include Triangle of Sadness, Ruben Östlund’s new feature after his Palme d’Or winner The Square. Nelly Rapp by Amanda Adolfsson and Utvandrarna (English title TBA) by Erik Poppe are also awarded funding. Market funding is being awarded to Dag för dag (English title TBA) by Felix Herngren, Bamse och vulkanön by Christian Ryltenius and Ur spår (English title TBA) by Mårten Klingberg.

Ruben Östlund follows up Cannes winner The Square with Triangle of Sadness, a contemporary satire that starts from the salons of the fashion world, continues onto a luxury yacht, and ends up on a desert island where hierarchies are turned upside-down. Woody Harrelson has been signed for one of the roles and location scouting is under way.

Utvandrarna, directed by Erik Poppe (Utøya: July 22, The King’s Choice) is the story of Kristina Nilsson, a mother who leaves a poverty-stricken Sweden with her family in the 1850s and sets out on a long, dangerous journey, hoping to find a better life for herself and her children in America. The film is based on Vilhelm Moberg’s much-loved suite of novels The Emigrants, and the story is now being told on film for the first time from Kristina’s perspective.

Nelly Rapp Monster Agent by Amanda Adolfsson is about an ordinary girl who is going to spend the autumn school holidays with her uncle Hannibal. Nelly is going to be a monster agent and fight monsters and ghosts. The film is currently being shot and is based on the popular children’s books by Martin Widmark.

Sagres is the first feature directed by Lovisa Sirén, and is a road movie about sisters Maya and Nilo. On an unpredictable journey across Europe, they’re forced to put up with their own and each other’s shortcomings. As with her short film Baby, she is again working with cinematographer Lisabi Fridell and actor Bahar Pars (A Man Called Ove).

Market funding

Market funding, which aims to support films with strong box-office potential and to broaden the repertoire, is also being awarded to films for younger audiences. In Bamse och vulkanön Bamse, Little Skip and Shellman are off to find the scientist Beanka, an old friend of Shellman’s.

Felix Herngren, the director behind box-office successes The 101-Year-Old Man Who Skipped Out on the Bill and Disappeared (Hundraettåringen som smet från notan och försvann, 2016) and The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (Hundraåringen som klev ut genom fönstret och försvann, 2013) is now making Dag för dag. A life-affirming comedy drama about it never being too late to make changes in your life. On a campervan trip from Gothenburg to Switzerland, five very different people come together for an old man’s last wish. Cross-generation friendships develop, there’s love in life’s twilight years, and life-changing decisions are made.

Mårten Klingberg’s comedy drama Ur spår is also being awarded market funding. It is about mid-life crises, exercise obsession and childlessness, and takes place during Vasaloppet, a classic long-distance, cross-country ski race in Sweden.
