Diversity, Inclusion and Film Criticism: Giving Audiences What They Really Want

Filmrummet in collaboration with CinemAfrica present a discussion of diversity within film criticism and the importance of traditionally underrepresented critics: women and people of color. An esteemed international panel will discuss the experiences of established critics, identify innovative channels of criticism and audience engagement, as well as determine new industry standards.

Valerie Complex
Valerie is a New York based journalist, author and screenwriter with an impressive journalist resume, writing for Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Harper’s Bazaar among others. She aims to change the landscape of film and cinematic storytelling to add to the lack of voices from marginalized communities.

Katarina Hedren
Katarina is a film curator and critic based in Johannesburg. She is the co-programmer of First Wednesday Film Club – the biggest independent film club in South Africa.

Mark A. Reid
Mark A. Reid is professor of English and film at the University of Florida at Gainesville, where he teaches African Diasporic studies. Reid is author of Redefining Black Film, PostNegritude Visual and Black Lenses, Black Voices: African American Film Now, among others. He is a member of Authors Guild and Authors League of America.

Nathan Hamelberg, journalist and pop culture critic based in Stockholm, Sweden.
